Why do URL structures matter?

Why do URL structures matter?

25.Oct.2021

URLs that are machine-readable, or search engine friendly, use relevant keywords in the URL to indicate what the page is about. They do this by using descriptive words and phrases within the URL itself. Put simply, this means you should avoid generic URLs like:

http://www.example.com/prod1

http://www.example.com/cat

Structure your URLs so they describe what content is on each individual page as accurately as possible; for example:

http://www.example.com/residential-roofing-perth This makes it easier for both browsers (people), and search engines (machines) to understand the purpose of the page based upon its URL, which improves both accessibility and search engine friendliness.

In the example above, it's clear that this page is about a type of roofing in Perth - the focus keyword being 'residential'. Search engines cannot over-emphasise how important these keywords are to ranking pages.

Please note: URLs should also be short and concise in order to increase their efficiency in passing on visitors from a search engine result. Short URLs may not necessarily include every relevant word or phrase you would like but they will still benefit from having some kind of descriptiveness in them. If you have lengthy content on a webpage then consider using a permalink element with anchor tags (see permalink examples here). Keyword use within the URL has been shown to increase click through rates by approximately 50% so it is well worth looking to implement as many as possible. URLs should also be user-friendly and search engine friendly - please see our further reading section for more information on this topic.
