When to use a URL Shortener

When to use a URL Shortener

13.Sep.2021

A URL shortener is a tool that takes on another site’s long and unwieldy web address and condenses it to fit into fewer characters.

URL shortenings are great for sharing links on social media, or even in an email or chat conversation.

One of the most popular shortened address services is http://bitly.com/ (which is where I'm directing this article from). There's also http://goo.gl/ which you can use  straight from your Gmail window- no copy-pasting necessary!

When should you use these shortened addresses? Any time you want to share a link with someone else quickly and conveniently! That includes:

*Sharing a new post on the blog ( https://www.5minutemail.com/  )

*Sharing a new page on the wiki ( https://wiki.5minutemail.com  )

*Directing people to your shop or store with an easy-to-remember address ( http://etsy.com )

*Adding links to your Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and other social media profiles! You can use bitly’s Social Tool here - it will automatically shorten anything you share with it: https://bitly.com/a/social_tools  (Also great for using on websites that might otherwise block traffic from domains they don’t recognize!)

What about trackers? Usually shortened addresses won't come with trackers. However, some social media platforms only allow short links to be shared within their own websites- so if you're posting on Twitter or Facebook, these might come with extra tracking information attached.

Always check your URL's! Make sure the address is what you wanted- especially when it comes to shortened addresses, which often go through several redirects before they land at their destination!

Keep in mind that there are other services out there besides bitly - for example http://ow.ly/url/shorten-url . They all work similarly enough that the same things apply across the board: shorten away!
