URL shortener #11: Cut.Ly #Matchurl

URL shorteners like Bitly, Ow.ly (Hootsuite), and TinyURL are incredibly popular, but there’s another free option that deserves to be known about: Cut.Ly.

Cut.Ly gives you a custom URL for whatever site your linking to, which looks something like http://cut.ly/1yvrqIp . What makes this service unique is that it puts real-time analytics at your fingertips, allowing you to see how many people click on the link you’ve shortened, where they came from (the referrer), what browser or operating system they were using when they clicked it, and whether they shared your content on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter - all in one place.

Cut.Ly also has a free custom URL shortener button you can add to your browser toolbar, so shortening your link just takes one click. If you want to get the most out of the service, however, it’s worth signing up for an account - this will give you access to additional analytics info like time spent on page and social sharing referrals. For more information on Cut.Ly, check out their website or watch their short video . [ARTICLE END]

To copy this article's content (with attribution), follow these steps: 1) Click here to select all of the code in this box 2) Copy that code 3) Click here to open a new window with the code in it 4) Right click in the new window and select "Copy" from the dropdown menu 5) Paste it into a document on your computer to save as a text file for future reference Skip ahead to read about choosing an image.

Step 1: Select all of the code in this box

Step 2: Copy that code

Step 3: Click here to open a new window with the code in it

Step 4: Right click in the new window and select "Copy" from the dropdown menu

Option 2 will copy everything onto your clipboard, meaning you can paste it anywhere, whether or not there's already some text present. However, if there is other text on your clipboard (which might be allowed depending on where you're pasting), then you might see unexpected results. If you're pasting in a word processing program, Microsoft Word for instance, then the existing text will probably shift around and may change in content/style (depending on what was already in there), or it might not paste in at all.

Option 1 should copy only the specific code that we want to share in this example directly into your clipboard so that when you go to paste it somewhere, everything works as expected. The downside is that you can't copy more than one line of code at a time using this method because each line's worth of code is replaced with an image placeholder when you click "GO." So if there were five lines of code total, and we wanted to them all, we'd need to click "GO" five separate times.

To choose an image to accompany your link, follow these steps: 1) Click here to open a new window with the code in it 2) Right click in this window and select "Copy" from the dropdown menu 3) Paste it into a document on your computer to save as a text file for future reference 4) Replace whatever's in between the quotations in image URL with whatever image you want 5) Delete the two quotation marks at either end of your chosen image URL 6) Select all of the text in your document 7) Cut that selection 8) Return back to paste.fyi , click GO, paste what you copied earlier (don't worry about selecting anything), and hit enter To learn more about working with the text file you created, check out this article . Before generating a shortened URL, choose an image to accompany it by substituting your own image's URL between the quotation marks in image URL. For example, "referrer":"http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/571/328/cad-20080602-270a46d41bf3560d1acf8d5ce3fcb7" will display this cloud icon on paste.fyi (if you haven't changed your profile picture since March 2013, that is!) If pasting multiple lines of code into PasteBin, the second line will be displayed beneath the first.
