Using a URL shortener is one of the most important aspects of social media. It makes it easy to share your link on multiple platforms with whatever you want to call it, but there's more than meets the eye when it comes to making sure you're doing it right: you need to know how and where to shorten.

 

1. Don't use private/incorrect shortened URLs in ads, posts, etc.

2. Don’t place shortened URLs in embedded objects (e.g., images) when posting content - this will stop Google from properly indexing that content into their search engine spider bots).

3. Don't add unnecessary symbols such as underscores or hyphens at the beginning or end of your short URLs, and don't use unnecessary (decorative) punctuation.

4. Don't use a URL shortener that uses redirects (other than http://www.bitly.com as it has Pro plan which doesn’t do this).

5. Use a custom domain name to shorten your long URL so you can track how many people click on the link through search engines such as Google or Bing etc. You can purchase cheap domains from places like GoDaddy or Bluehost

6. Don’t use a shortener with no tracking structure — just stick with bitly unless you have developed something else yourself with analytics and tracking capabilities in place
