So what then is a URL shortener all about?

04.Sep.2021

Many people have misconceptions about what URL shorteners actually do. I’ve heard many false claims over the years that link shorteners are not designed for tracking links, but rather they are used to hide spammy URLs behind a customized domain.

Anybody who knows anything about marketing will know this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Many companies treat their shortened URLs as part of their marketing strategy, where even the smallest detail is worked out in advance to maximize clicks and conversions. Some examples include; custom branded domains (e.g., Bitly), paid advertising (e.g., AdFender), influencer outreach (e.g., ClickMagick) and much more! The beautiful is that you can accomplish a lot of these tasks without spending a penny, so it’s worth exploring the possibilities.

So what then is a URL shortener all about? In simple terms, a URL shortening service takes long URLs and converts them into shorter ones that redirect to the original link. For example: http://www.marketinginsiderpro.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-url-shorteners would become http://bitly.com/SHORTENEDIDX (notice how we use bit.ly as our example).

The great part about this system is that you can track your shortened links and find out exactly who clicked on it and where they were referred from (e.g., Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). You can then use this information to target similar users in the future.

Another popular feature of many URL shorteners is that you can create branded links for free. The main benefit behind these is that whenever somebody clicks on your link it will automatically pre-populate fields with your custom parameters or perform an action (e.g., visit a specific page). This works by linking together the original long URL to your short one using redirects, which are basically permanent HTTP 301 responses.

It’s also worth noting that there are different types of URLs used by each service, but they aren’t required reading unless you work directly with web development! For example: Bitly uses its own URL format called BitlyV3, while Rebrandly uses a slightly different one called RebrandlyV5. This is because each service has its own set of features and capabilities that they want to focus on.

URL shorteners tend to fall into three distinct categories: [LIST OF CATEGORIES] [ARTICLE END]

Note that the title of the article may change depending on where it is being published or linked to from another website/online resource. For example, if it appears as a single article on a blog then the title should be something like "The Ultimate Guide To URL Shorteners". If it appears as part of a series of articles on another website/online resource, then the title could be something along the lines of "All About URL Shorteners" or similar.

It's also possible that your link may appear with different text to what you've entered above (i.e., linked/featured in an article). Again, this will depend on where you are linking to and how the poster has titled their post. For example, if someone is sharing your article via Twitter, they might use something like ["This Week's Top 5 #LinkBuilding Articles"](http://bitlycom/+LetsGoDigitalBlog) rather than the post's title.

It is advisable to enter some text after your link, so people know where they can go if they want to read more and so search engines can see it as well. Use something like: check out this article we found on bitly.com or click here to read more about "url shorteners" etc. If you're linking directly to a blog post on another website, then use something like: find more information on URL shortening on [the author]'s blog at http://bitlycom/+LetsGoDigitalBlog .
