Shortny is a nice little URL shortener script. It has all the basic features that you expect in a URL shortener, including password protection for your links. This article will tell you how to set up and configure this really easy web application. 

1) First of all, download Shortny from sourceforge.net .

2) Extract the archive into directory on your site directory server (i.e., http://example.com/shortny/) or on some folder under it if you don't have access to website's root directory.

3) Log in to FTP client tool with credentials provided by hosting provider admin panel, go to 'public_html' or 'htdocs' directory on your server and create new file named 'shortny.php' - copy the content of the file from attached archive on sourceforge.net website to it and save changes.

4) Log in to your hosting account's admin panel .

5) Open PHP configuration manager, usually located somewhere on a home page or inside a hosting provider's control panel, find 'shortny.php' script under 'Add New Scripts' tab and enable it by clicking on corresponding checkbox labeled as enabled/checked (this would vary depending on specific web-server software you use).

6) Go to 'File Manager/FTP connections' provide login credentials for FTP server tool provided by your hosting provider, click on 'New Site', enter new site name e.g., "shortny" and click on "Create Site".

7) Select the 'shortny' site we created in step 6, right-click and navigate to "New->File" or "Site Functions->New File" and create a new file named "config.php".

8) Copy the contents from attached archive provided on official Shortny website, http://sourceforge.net/projects/shor tny/, into newly created 'config.php' file .

9) Create a folder under your hosting account's root directory named 'shortny', go to 'File Manager/FTP connections,' allow FTP client tool access to this directory by clicking on checkbox labeled as enabled/checked, select shortny site in dropdown menu, click on "New->Folder", enter the folder name e.g., 'shortny' and click 'Create Folder'.

10) Create a .htaccess file in your hosting account's root directory, allow use of htpasswd (if needed). Open '.htaccess' file using any text editor tool/software you like (e.g., notepad++), copy the contents from attached archive provided on official Shortny website, http://sourceforge.net/projects/shor tny/, into newly created '.htaccess' file and save changes.

11) Visit the home page or public_html directory of your site via browser, if everything is configured correctly you should see following message: "This is your Shortny Welcome Page."
