Shortny is also a nice little URL shortener script with all the basic features that you expect in a URL shortener. It is incredibly easy to set up and use.
The front-end of the script has a nice responsive design with an optional dark theme. You can use it to create shortened URLs with custom text. The links can also be password protected.
The back-end offers the functionality to delete any old shortened URLs, add or edit the ads displayed on the webpage, and edit the CSS to customize the look of the website. All the input is properly validated for additional security. ## Front-End Features * Nice responsive web design with an optional dark theme * Add logo * Drag&drop support for images * Password protected links * Uptime monitoring * Shortened URLs are shown in search engines results pages * International characters support
## Back-End Features * Delete any old shortened URLs - Delete all shortened URLs for a particular domain or just the ones with a certain URL pattern. You can also delete several at once by putting the list of domains in a text file. * Add your own ads - Just put your ads code in the input field and click on save changes. The ads will appear on every page of shortny, but you can disable them on some pages if needed. The script comes with 3 ad spots: One under the header, one before/after each link, and one at the bottom of each page. By default, they are used to display Google ads. You can change or delete them, and add your own in the back-end of the script. * Customize CSS - The front-end stylesheet can be customized by changing some variables in the file "stylevar.css". In this file you can also add your own CSS rules. * Main script options - The script has a few options that are available from the back-end. You can change them from the settings page of the script.
Here is an example of what you will find on the settings page:
The screenshot above shows how to set up ad spots for multiple websites, but the same principles apply if you want to use it with just one website. ## Installation and Setup To install Shortny, simply create a new directory on your server called "shortny", then upload all files in the archive into that directory. You will need FTP or File Manager access to do that. If you cannot install scripts on your domain directly, you can install it on a subdomain and use your main domain as the source domain. For example: "subdomain.yoursite.com" (of course, you should delete the files after setting up).
To create a new Shortny ShortLink login to the back-end and click on Add New Virtual Domain in the Domains & URLs section of the left-side menu bar. Then enter your website's main URL in the input field, for example: http://www.example.com/ . Click on Save changes when done.
You can choose any name or phrase for this virtual domain, but it is important that it does not conflict with other names and phrases already used by other users of this script since links created under one virtual domain can be used by all its users.
After that, you will get to the Domain details page where you need to fill in some information about your website. You should fill in the Title field because it is required for Google search results to work properly. The second option is Keywords . They are not needed for Google but they may be shown on shortny links. Just enter one or more keywords describing your site content - separated by commas.
The next section covers the actual domain name of your website. If you use a subdomain like "subdomain", you don't have to input anything here, just leave this input empty and click Save changes . But if you use a main domain like "example", then you have to enter it here - without the "http://" prefix.
Next you can configure your ads on shortny links under General settings . You should fill in at least one of the three Ad spots so that shortny links will be functional. The "Ads position" options mean exactly what their names say: where the ad code will appear on every page of your website. If you don't know how to get an ad code, just Google for some tutorials, or contact your webmaster to find out this information.
If you don't want to show Shortny ads on your website then just leave all fields blank and click Save changes .
The next section offers two additional scripts that are installed with this package: Uptime Monitor and Shortny API, but they are completely optional and you don't need them to use Shortny.
The General settings section is followed by the Advanced options . There you can choose the default format (HTML or BBCode) of shortened links and whether or not to enable external API requests. The API feature will allow users who visit your website using certain browsers (eg: Firefox), open shortny links in a new tab instead of opening them in their current browser tab. This is useful since it doesn't block the back button for this user if they decide to click on another link on your website which leads them to a different page than he or she expected. External API means that those browsers can still access all other parts of your website as usual without any restrictions.
If you want to use the API feature, then check the box next to "Enable external API requests". You can also customize several Shortny settings under this section such as font and text colors. The only parameter that has to be entered is your own Google Analytics account number. It is not necessary if you don't have one yet, but it will help you track your traffic using Google Analytics if you decide to enable this option.
The Scripts and Styles field is where you can input or edit certain CSS styles for short links and other elements on your website: ads, pages, posts etc... If you're not familiar with this technology then just leave those fields blank and click Save changes .
