Shlink #MatchURL : No. 1 Premium URL Shortener

Shlink #MatchURL : No. 1 Premium URL Shortener

What is Shlink?

Shlink is a self-hosted URL shortener. You are able to create subdomains on your own servers, pointing towards any location of the internet.

Actually, you can ask @unshorten about it - he already wrote about perfectly explaining what's an URL shortener .

What makes Shlink different?

The difference lies in the fact that Shlink doesn't have any storage for URLs, just some plain old PHP files that will generate HTML/JS data being requested by browsers. If these would be requested by humans instead of automated crawlers, they'd show nice messages like "Sorry, this domain has moved", so there's no risk someone takes over your shortened URLs created with Shlink.

Shlink alternatives?

There are only a few other similar services I've come across, but to name them:

1. Duck Duck Go's own URL shortener

2. TinyURL - one of the two most prominent "main" competitors to Shlink

3. Bitly - another big competitor in the field of shortened URLs retrieval

4. Rebrandly - another service created specifically to shorten URLs; this is what happens when you post a link on it (you can also see an example here )  5. YOURLS , Easy-To-Use Self Hosted URL Shortener 6. MozURL 7. Yourls by Matt Kruse (the creator of YOURLS) 8. LstuURL - the option of adding a custom domain is available, but that's about it - both free and paid forms are supported.

How to install Shlink?

The installation process couldn't be much simpler: just create a database and run an SQL file from Shlink's archive on your server.

Here's how to do it step by step:

1. First of all, go ahead to this address , download the latest version of Shlink and unpack it somewhere where it won't be moved or deleted in the future (I recommend using a local directory inside your computer for faster access) 2. Open up phpMyAdmin (on MySQL/MariaDB) by typing its address into your browser 3. Select "Create new database" (if one exists already, you can select it) and enter a name for the database. Keep in mind that this name cannot be re-used for other databases on the same server 4. Open up Shlink's SQL file , go to step 2 and copy the contents of this file into phpMyAdmin by clicking "Go" 5. After the process is over, click "Import" and wait a little - nobody likes waiting but this really doesn't take long

What happens after installation?

After installation, you have nothing more to do than set up your own URL shortener using Shlink's admin panel! :) It looks as easy as everything else surrounding this service!

Well done, your brand new free self hosted URL Shortener is up and running. Enjoy!

You can find the installation guide in your Shlink's admin panel, under "Help" → "Installation Guide" section. Have fun!

How to remove Shlink? Regardless of how you feel about Shlink, I'll just tell you that deleting it is no-brainer - simply delete all files from this directory . However, if something goes wrong or you wish to re-install, just follow these steps: 1. Delete the database 2. Download another version of Shlink (different than in step 1) 3. Open up phpMyAdmin 4. Select the database in question 5. Click "Delete" in top menu 6. Go back to step 2 in this article Still confused? If you are still confused about anything, just leave a comment on this article or contact @unshorten .

What else do you need to know? I'd say that's pretty much it. Shlink is simple and straight-forward, which allows anyone to use it with ease. It requires no configuration at all, so there's nothing more for me to explain here. :)

I wish you all the best! Enjoy your new URL shortener! Thank you for reading my articles - please follow @unshorten if you like what I share with the community - and see ya later! Miki Mottes (Mikis)
