Ever find yourself copying and pasting long web addresses into tiny URL box? It's not that big of an issue, but it can be easier to share or remember a link if you shorten it. There are plenty of services out there that let you do this. But which one should you use?

Here are five popular sites with brief overviews--and some tips for using them.

1) (Unshorten)

2) TinyURL (Shorten/unshorten)

3) Bitly (Shorten/unshorten/track/analyze links--by account or by URL through bulk actions in the analytics section.) *bitly also has an v3 API .*  To learn more about the API, click here .

4) ow.ly (Shorten/unshorten--by account or by URL through bulk actions in the analytics section.) *Text: "Linking with Hootsuite is easy and effective--just set up an account and install the browser extension."*

Tips for using link shortening services:

1) Make sure you check each service's fine print, to know what you're getting into. Some offer limited-time shortened URLs, some offer traffic reports, and others don't give away your info.

2) Try to use different services when sharing links--you never know which might go down the next day. If two are down, take advantage of another one while their system is on the fritz.

3) When it comes time to post a long URL with tracking information in it (for example), shorten it at dropbox .com first. Then paste that code into your social media content rather than pasting the original link multiple times.

4) If you're using Gmail, try this trick for super-short links . (Tip: Instead of pasting the link right after the "=" sign, break it up into two parts.)

5) To save time with repetitive tasks, don't hesitate to create an account at your favorite shortening sites. It'll be worth it if they offer bulk shorten/unshorten capabilities.

6) Use caution when clicking on shortened URLs--it's possible they could lead to malware or viruses. Make sure you know where the website is taking you before following through on a shortened link.

7) Keep track of how many times your links are clicked by either counting them yourself or using one of these tools .

8 ) To get the most out of your shortened links, make sure you're using full URLs when sharing them on social media. (For example: https://goo.gl/WL0jKh )

9) If you're savvy enough to use an API , help yourself out and learn more about it by checking here .

10) Try hosting your own URL shortener. Jason from Backlinko   did it with his Linode VPS  and makes money off referrals . Here's how he did it for less than $5 a month .

And finally...

If you have to share a few ginormous links, there's no harm in shortening them because the process is quick and simple. Aside from being easier to look at, shortened links can also be helpful for print ads, physical signage, or places where you can't link to another site.
