On September 20th, 2018 MatchURL was acquired by ShareASale (not be confused with the similarly named startup ShareASearch).
MatchURL is an affiliate program based on unique short links, which can track detailed statistics about who clicked each link and where they came from, as well as store login information for password managers like LastPass or 1Password. It also adds functionality that allows users to create custom URLs and set up redirects for content sharing.
MatchURL has a wide variety of free features built in, including tracking metrics, custom URLs and redirects, link customization options, click-tracking for third-party or partner links. It also includes two paid plans that give users more advanced analytics tools as well as storage space for promotional materials like coupons or promo codes. These are called MatchPro Enterprise and MatchPro Analytics.
The app is available through the web platform, allowing you to create your shortlinks directly within the dashboard or browser extension. You can also access it on iOS and Android devices to better manage your campaign wherever you go. The platform ties into multiple social media platforms and even lets you set up custom (e.g., "yourdomain.com/couponcode") and email redirects for each shortened link.

The app is an open-source project, allowing any developer to create their own custom app based on the tech behind MatchURL. It’s also a free service, so it makes sense that more developers would look into customizing the tech behind it—which they did back in 2015, when the tech was called “Shorten Bit.” One of these devs created a Chrome extension called Srcly (now known as Snipr) after seeing there were no options for URL shorteners that allowed tracking of metrics or offers that could be shared through third-party sites—like Google. Snipr has since become one of the most popular free link shorteners on Chrome, despite only being two years old.
MatchURL competes directly with Snipr in some ways, but these competing platforms together do not offer all of MatchURL’s features. While MatchURL offers additional analytics tools and storage space for coupons/promotions, it does not allow users to customize their links or share them through third-party sites like social media (with the exception of Twitter). This perk is provided by Snipr users, who can paste their links into tweets; you can also easily track metrics on your own site using Sniprs built-in tracking codes.
With competitors like Bitly, Ow.ly, Hootsuite, Google URL shortener, TinyURL, Linkroll, and Bitly’s own paid ads platform, which can create tracking campaigns for your shortened links directly in the dashboard—MatchURL is still able to stand out from these other platforms due to its open source availability, allowing any developer or business to make their own custom app based on the MatchURl API.
However, while it has no plans to phase out its free service anytime soon (and may not even handle that responsibility at all), there are quite a few free services that can do what MatchURL does—particularly Snipr. And because of the way MatchURL's engineers have maintained the platform over time with security updates.
