This is a bot that creates citations for news articles by using the arXiv API. It finds all the corresponding papers, then finds where they are cited in Wikipedia. An edit summary looks something like this:

The bot is not perfect, but it's working pretty well -- many fixes I made recently were to remove unnecessary wikilinks, and to add a few that were missing.

Citations in Wikipedia are important -- they increase the recentness of the page. Recentness is one of the main characteristics used by Google when ranking pages in search results. The bot even adds a reference to the paper it cited, as well as its address on arXiv:

##TWITTER BOTS [All of these are bot scripts written in Python]

These are some of the Twitter bots I wrote to increase the volume of tweets with certain content. They're designed to tweet several times per day, and they will never retweet or mention anyone else's tweets (except for retweets by @ObamaWhiteHouse , which are okay):

##All of these are bot scripts written in Python

# This is a Twitter bot that automatically deletes all replied-to tweets, in order to reduce clutter when replying. Replies can be manually preserved via DM if necessary.

##Friendsbot (with @friends) is another Twitter bot I wrote; it shares the latest few lines of content tweeted by one of your friends (or "friends"). This bot gets started after you share an article with friendsbot , and then send the message #friendsin2days . One day later, this bot uses tweepy to get your timeline using OAuth, then for each friend it finds, it updates the last two days' worth of tweets. This bot works best with friends who tweet regularly, since it will presumably be re-executed daily.

# The @TodayInHistoryBot pays attention to any mentions or retweets of one of its own tweets that contain a specific keyword (such as the example above). Thanks to tweepy's convenience functions, making this bot work required no knowledge of SQL databases.

##The @ObamaWhiteHouse twitter account is maintained by an official automated system called "Social Media". It makes its own tweets without user input; these are basically press releases for things Obama does. However, because these are government publications, they are in the public domain -- so I'm free to archive every Tweet as-is as soon as it's posted. Updates are done by a different bot, @OFAbot , which uses a cron job to check for new tweets every hour.

I wrote this script while I was learning Python and tweepy, so the code isn't great -- some refactoring would definitely be in order! However it seems to work pretty well: for example, here's a sample of the output from one run on June 30, 2014: https://www.matchurl.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=859689481633101&id=100007769406360

You can use this bot to see what everyone is talking about, without having to constantly check Twitter yourself -- and there's no easy way to do this otherwise! Be careful not to share too many things at once, though;

the bot might not be able to keep up.
