If you have a long URL, chances are good that it is also filled with words that no one would ever search for or find by looking at them. If your goal is to get more traffic to your site and improve its SEO ranking in the process, using a shorter domain name and structure can benefit you in many ways:

1) A Shorter Structure Means More Traffic

When you post a link to your website on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or Google+, it is best practice to shorten it. But why? There are three big reasons for this:

The first reason is the most obvious; the shorter the URL, the less space it takes up in your post. You can fit more information into 140 characters if you use keywords at the beginning rather than using them as part of an excessively long address. This allows your audience to see your post even if they don't click through and visit your site later on.

The second reason is that whenever search engines crawl social networks like Facebook or Twitter, they only index the main page of the domain name, not the full URL. For example, if you have a long URL that starts with http://www.example.com/some/long/path/to/a/big_file?v=1&k=sdfg and you post this on Twitter, search engines will only index the main page of your domain name, which is www.example.com . They won't index any of the other information after /some/long/path/, so it's asking for trouble to use such a long URL when sharing posts on social networks.

To prevent this, shorten your URLs to just the main part of your site using one these methods: 'Bitly' or Google's own 'goo.gl'.

Some sites provide a shortened URL that you don't even have to put in yourself. For example, Facebook uses bit.ly URLs for their shared links, and Twitter uses its own t.co URLs .

Finally, it's best practice if you want good search engine rankings to include relevant keywords as part of your domain name instead of as a random string of characters at the end or beginning of your URL. Using those same extended examples from above, www.example.com/some/long/path is better than www.example.com/some%2flong%2fpath , but www.example.com/keyword-rich-domain-name is better than both!

2) A Better Looking Site

One problem with having posts on social networks indexed by search engines is that users can't easily share your links when you use really long URLs. This is because the only part of your site that will get indexed when you include keywords in your domain name (which I covered above) is the main page, not individual pages like blog posts. So if someone wants to discuss one particular post or article, they may struggle to do so because search engines won't index their link.

To resolve this issue, make sure all of your important pages have shorter URLs than the main page of your site. For example, instead of www.mywebsite.com/some-keyword-rich-domain-name , use something shorter like www.mywebsite.com/post-name . This way, you will make it easier for people to find and share your content.

3) Google+ Almost Doesn't Exist

Sorry, but I have to say it. In May 2014, the search engine giant announced that they're going to stop using Google+ posts in their algorithm because "almost nobody" was using its +1 function when they originally introduced it. Since then, they announced that from now on any site with a custom URL will get a little extra SEO boost because of it. However, this is only true if the website in question is the original publisher or owner of said URL . It's probably not going to help much if someone takes a screenshot of one of your posts and uses that image on their own site, but it will definitely help if they go to the trouble of creating a custom URL (which is also known as a vanity or short link) for that image.
