Long, unruly links look suspicious

Long, unruly links look suspicious

13.Sep.2021

In the past, SEOs have known that shorter links tend to get more clicks. And while that is still true today, Google knows that short links aren’t always long for this world—and neither are their page rankings. In fact, long, unruly links look suspicious .

So what makes a link look unruly? A few things.

Sometimes the URL just doesn’t look right, so Google will exercise caution by not ranking it as high as it could be. Other times, however, a link might have the correct URL but is still marked as potentially dangerous or spammy because of its destination.

People used to post unsolicited links in online forums and social media comments with the intention of driving traffic to their site—a practice that was quickly made obsolete when Google began devaluing these kinds of links , which are no better than “naked” URLs containing only tracking parameters .

Finally, there are certain overused anchor text phrases that can appear unnatural , no matter how relevant they really are—so use anchor text wisely .

The bottom line is that it’s best to keep your link profile natural by not going overboard with links and anchor text—and if you want a page on your site to rank well, make sure the links on that page are relevant and don’t appear spammy.

In short, Google is unlikely to rank a webpage high in search rankings if the URL looks suspicious or unnatural. In addition, Google may take into consideration other factors such as whether a link contains an unusual amount of anchor text. http://backlinko.com/?s=how+to+make+longer+URLs *written by Zakary Peterson* published on February 10th, 2017 under wiki edits share this article the google search engine has begun to look passed title tags when ranking websites. long, unruly links are now being seen as potentially spammy by the engines and can lower your rankings in results. it is important to optimize everything correctly in order to rank higher within the search engines. if you have a link that is too long or too unnatural, then there is potential for it not to be ranked high in search results. long links are more likely to give searchers an impression of suspicious linking practices so they should be minimized whenever possible. when optimizing your website directories pages, try using shorter filenames with keywords in them, instead of full text filled names so they don’t get pushed down in the serps because the URL isn’t as short as possible. this will make it easier for the engines to crawl and index, which can help your rankings within search results. when creating new text content on your site use keywords in your URL instead of using them as a standalone keyword link. another consideration is using UTM parameters for any links you share online because then they tell you where the users came from and who helped that lead come to fruition. by doing this, it shows that people are linking directly back to your website instead of hiding their tracks through sneaky backlinking strategies on spammy sites. with Google's Penguin update penalizing spammy websites, there is no need to risk being blacklisted from the engines because of long unruly links pointing toward your website!
