hi
everyone in this video we'll be looking
at how to set up a blog in avada
there are numerous ways of doing this
some more flexible than others
so let's have a look make sure you

okay let's begin wordpress began its
life as a blogging platform
long before becoming a fully fledged
content management system
so blogging is in its dna and with avada
we have added various ways to set up a
blog to allow even greater flexibility
the stock standard wordpress way of
setting up a blog begins in the reading
settings
found from the dashboard under settings
reading
here you can set whether your home page
displays your latest blog posts or a
static page
and if you choose that what page is used
as the home page
and what page displays the posts on a
default install of wordpress and nevada
you will see that your home page
displays your latest posts instead of a
static page
which by default puts the blog on the
front page of your site
so the first method of setting up a blog
in nevada involves assigning a page to
show your posts
but here on the church pre-built website
instead of the latest posts
a static page has been assigned to be
the home page and no page is assigned to
be the blog page
that's because this site is not using an
assigned page for the blog
but before we look at that let's quickly
look at the first method
for this example i have published a new
page called blog
note that it's just an empty page as
it's really going to be just a
placeholder for the blog posts
you can customize the page to some
degree via the avada page options
but any direct content you add into the
page will not show using this method
let's go back now to the reading
settings and let's assign this blog page
as the posts page
and click save now this is a perfectly
fine way of doing things
the main downside to this however is a
lack of flexibility
the blog page we have selected is not
directly editable
if we return to our blog page and
refresh it
we can see the posts are now loading
into it but the layout is very plain
to control the layout of this page using
this method we can head to the global
options
and to the blog general blog tab here
there are dozens of settings that
control how the assigned blog page will
look
as can be seen at the top of the tab
there is a message letting you know that
the options on this tab mostly only
affect the assigned blog page
and blog archives there are options to
change the blog layout
control pagination and columns and many
other things
let's just change the layout to grid
turn on equal heights
and enable the featured image
so as you can see by changing the
various global options
you can customize the way the page looks
to something quite different from the
standard wordpress blog
but despite this being the standard
wordpress method we do not recommend you
set your blog up this way
there is a better alternative that gives
you much greater flexibility
this method involves designing your own
page and adding blog posts
directly to the page via blog based
elements
for this method we need to return to our
reading settings
and deselect any post page and save the
changes
as this site already has a page set up
as a blog let's go and look at that
it's called the news page the first
thing you should notice is the
flexibility of the content
this is the main blog page for the site
but there is also a nevada slider at the
top
a post slider and a recent posts element
a countdown element as well as the blog
element
it's just a normal page with no
limitations as to the layout or the
content used
this particular page is interesting in
that it's actually drawing in blog posts
from three different elements
the post slider the recent post element
and the main blog element down here
which gives it more of a magazine-like
appearance
the post slider element is showing a
slide with just the first blog post
while the recent post element next to it
is configured to display with the
thumbnails on side layout
and just three posts in one column it
also has a one post offset to avoid
duplicating the first post
and if i scroll down and edit the blog
element we can see it's using the grid
layer
and shows three columns on the page with
six posts per page
and with a post offset of four so as not
to repeat the post shown at the top of
the page
this is a clever way of showing blog
posts on the page in various ways
that will all update automatically when
new content is published
this instance of the blog element shows
posts from all categories
but there are options to show blog posts
in many different ways
for example you could add or exclude
certain categories you could even have
multiple instances of the blog element
on the page
pulling from different categories in
fact you can add the blog element as
many times as you prefer
to any page or post within your site
with each instance potentially
displaying different post content
depending on the settings in the element
the flexibility with this method is
almost endless and there are no real
downsides
there is also another element that can
be used here instead of the blog element
that's the postcards element watch the
how to use postcards in avada video for
a specific walkthrough of this feature
but what it does is basically allows you
to design the layout of these blog
thumbs here
so you have full control over how your
blog looks
i've already made a postcard in the
evada library so let's delete this blog
element and add our posts that way
i'll just add the postcards element and
i will choose my blog layout card
i'll just configure it a bit to display
how i want it to
the content source is posts and post
type is also posts
and i want to show all but i'll set the
number of posts to 6
and i'll make the post offset 4 so that
this section doesn't display the
forepost shown higher up
okay so now on the design tab i'll leave
the layout as a grid
i'll adjust the alignment to stretch the
number of columns to 2
and the column and row spacing to 40.
okay that should do it it's not usually
different from what we had with the blog
element
but postcards just allow you to design
your blog layout exactly as you want it
finally let's look at the layout of the
individual blog posts
by changing the options in the blog
single post tab of the global options
you can refine how you want the
individual posts to display
but even better you can now use avata
layouts to completely redesign how you
want your blog single post layout to
look
check out the how to build a custom
single post layout video linked below
for a full rundown of how this can be
achieved
but in a matter of minutes using a
pre-built layout
we can turn a single post layout like
this
into a layout like this now that's
flexibility
okay that should give you a good idea of
the different ways you can set up a blog
in nevada
