It was long thought that the precursor to the emoji was a hieroglyph from ancient Egypt circa 2000BC. This pictograph supposedly depicts a man at prayer but can also be used as a symbol for "alive" depending on whether his head or his feet are depicted above ground! We assume he's not praying to himself... Image via GIPHY

The word 'emoji' is a blend of the Japanese words "e" (picture) and "moji" (letter), first coined in 1999 by a guy called Shigetaka Kurita , who was employed at NTT Docomo, Japan's first mobile carrier. Kurita wanted a way to differentiate images from text on mobile screens as small as a postage stamp back then. He created 176 original emoji for this purpose - including his favourite: the face with tears of joy which you can see up there ^^

The Google Android keyboard followed in 2012 and then Microsoft brought out Windows Phone 8.1 with an emoji feature in 2014 to support the Unicode standard, which also included the humble hash symbol (aka number sign) and interrobang (‽). This has since been built into Windows 10 .
