Facebook URL shortener

Facebook URL shortener

12.Oct.2021

If you're using Facebook, you might have noticed that we recently rolled out a built-in URL shortener .

This is different than our other link tools, like link sharing and login with Facebook. With the built-in shortener, all links shared on your business page will be shared as shorter URLs with tracking. It doesn't work for ads targeting now, but it does mean less truncated links showing up in the comments of your updates!

Head over to the Help Center  for more info and if you want to try it out (or remove it from posts), click here .

If they really wanted to make this valuable for readers who copy/paste text into their content, they should provide a script to do this automatically.

You can see the difference in traffic due to Facebook's built-in URL shortener here: http://i.imgur.com/OyKvG2F.png . This is using a vanity URL like facebook.com/MyBusinessPage and it looks like you can use up to 20 characters for your URLs, so I could pick something like facebook.com/YourID

According to this post on Search Engine Land , Facebook has started rolling out their own branded URL shortener that allows ALL links shared on ALL pages (not just ads) to be shortened and tracked by default - even when pasting directly from the clipboard!   It seems there might be some confusion in the community about this, so I want to clear up a few things.

First, links shared on our business pages will be shortened and tracked by default using this new tool! This doesn't work for ad targeting yet but it's useful for posts and comments. If you don't like that we're doing this (we know some of you hate shorteners), you can turn it off here .

There is an option to set your own vanity URL, but we recommend picking something under 20 characters long instead of relying on Facebook's automatically generated one.

You can track clicks on these URLs with our standard link tracking tools: goals , conversions , and referrers . Keep in mind that since these links are shared publicly, you won't be able to see the full analytics like with direct link shares (since your friends can also click on these URLs).

*This is where I would include the script that makes this happen automatically using JEXL if it were available. If someone knows how, please let me know.*

Second, all links shared in Facebook comments are now shortened by default. This includes short URLs linking back to your business page and longer ones pointing back to sites around the web! Again, if you don't want us sharing any URL as a link in comments, you can opt out here . We've found this to increase engagement on posts since many people may prefer reading stories via links vs trying to type them out manually.

*Again, if someone knows how to do this automatically with JEXL, let me know. I don't think it's possible myself.*

And thirdly, Facebook ads targeting now includes short URLs! We're rolling out the ability for advertisers to show their ads using these links over the next few months. This makes it more realistic for businesses to tell stories with their ads on Facebook - instead of saying "sign up" or "visit our website", they can say "The new Acme Widget is 20% faster and has 50% more power!" These are still tracked as conversions by default so you'll be able to see which ad led customers back to your business page or website.

We hope these changes will help you tell better stories on Facebook! Let us know what you think.

If you want to get more than 20 characters in your vanity URL, please let me know and we can set up a custom one for you.

So it seems that this is actually good news for Page admins who also run ads - the links you post in ads targeting will be tracked . However, since pasting links into comments defaults to facebook.com/YourID (which may or may not be long enough to truncate)

Thanks again everyone. Your input is invaluable to us and we're always working hard to adapt and provide the best solutions for you and your needs.

Thank you so much! Have an excellent day!

This script will pick up URLs from any box on your site (including other articles) and add a tracking code to it which will be visible in Google Analytics within 24 hours (you'll see a new "content=" section show up in your organic search queries). The script will only run if the URL is pasted directly from the clipboard, so if you copy something from a textbox or article text before pasting it, the code won't be added.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or comments! Enjoy :)

Thank you again for all of your feedback! Please note that this tool does not work on Facebook Business Pages yet -- this was released for personal profiles and groups only. This link tracking issue should be resolved within the next week or two--we're still working through some final bugs/tweaking of that feature. ---- SocialFlow Scripts are currently set up to generate automatic messages based on what content is shared on social media sites. The beginning of the message is generated by SocialFlow, and we provide you with a template so that you can add your own input. This message will be sent to all subscribers who have assigned themselves to receive updates from your site when new content is posted.
