What cool new tools does Google have in store for us?

Google has been busy recently. We all know they don't want to be left behind by Facebook and Twitter – which is why they're constantly updating their products, including almost almost weekly updates to image search.

But what else are they working on? Recently, I noticed an update to the Link Tool in Webmaster Tools that allows you to create custom link shorteners. This means you can replace long URLs with this shortened one that points back to your website - sounds pretty sweet! But, if you use Google's standard URL shortener (goo.gl) , you might not feel the benefit of using a custom shortener because it offers similar features already. So what are the benefits of using Google's custom link shortener over the standard one? I would say there are two main benefits:

1. Campaign tracking - as you create a campaign, you keep track of how many clicks your shortened links have received, which is great to monitor conversions and ROI.

2. Enterprise-grade control – this has potential for big businesses who want to use the same short URLs but don't want them all going through a third-party tool or possibly being hacked by malicious users. You can set up limits on how often it expires and where it directs to prevent any misuse from happening.

In addition, since Google owns this link shortening service, they can guarantee that your data is secure with high levels of encryption and security - which is great!

The only downside I've seen to this is that you can't actually set specific keywords as your shortened links. For example, if you're an SEO and want all of your links pointing back to one section of your website (like a blog), it would be helpful to include the keywords in the shortened link to help drive traffic there. Otherwise, we might end up with a bunch of random numbers and letters as our shortener…which could turn out confusing for both users and marketers trying to track campaigns.
