-If you're security conscious, it's best to have both HTTPs and password protection enabled. Otherwise, HTTPs alone will be sufficient as it provides an extra level of encryption on top of normal HTTP.
-If you sell products online, then switching from 'http' to 'https' will help give consumers confidence in your site's legitimacy - also called SSL certification.
-It's not mandatory to use HTTPS, but it might become more important over time.
-A page with 'https' is less likely to get hacked or modified than its HTTP counterpart; therefore it can increase your site's trustworthiness and user experience.
-Google currently recommends using just HTTPs if you're just starting out to create an HTTPS ready foundation for your site. It also advocates testing -- both how easily users can navigate the transition from http to https, as well as how much of an impact the transition has on search rankings. However, Google warns that ranking changes are based on algorithm updates so you'll need to monitor their effects closely once the switch is complete.
