URL shortening is a great way to see how many clicks you're getting from each source. Whenever you post or tweet a link, it can be helpful to know where people are coming from as well as the overall performance of your social media marketing campaign.

Shortened links provide traffic stats and an option to customize their appearance, making them both functional and fun! Here's a list of URL shorteners that we found to be the best:

Best URL Shortener Services:

1. Bit.Do:

Features: Customizable appearance, traffic stats, an automatic QR code generator and short branded domains available for $85 a month.

URL: bit.do/YOUR_LINK_HERE

2. Goo.gl:

Features: Easily customizable appearance with advanced options such as custom URLs and backgrounds, real-time analytics and highly customizable embed codes that allow you to use the shortened link as a banner on your site or include it anywhere on the web with just a few clicks (no HTML knowledge required). A single link can also be used on more than one account at the same time. The downside is that they do not offer free branding or customizable colors like bit.do does.

URL: goo.gl/YOUR_LINK_HERE

3. Bitly:

Features: Easily customizable appearance and embeddable code, real-time analytics and the option to create a shortened URL with no link tracking to avoid click fraud though this feature can be somewhat complicated and requires additional knowledge of DoFollow and NoFollow links which we won't get into here (Google it! Wikipedia is your friend). They also offer an API for developers who want access to traffic stats from their apps or websites outside of social media sites. The downside is that they do not have a free branding option, only paid plans starting at $495 a month though the cost will vary depending on the plan and company size.

4. Ow.ly:

Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and a single link can only be used on one Twitter account at a time so you'll need to create an individual account for each page you want shortened (not ideal). They do however have the most aesthetically pleasing option as far as design choices go with different backgrounds such as 'Wallpaper', 'Photo Library', 'Magazine Cover' and more which is fun if that's your thing but won't necessarily help with branding or conversions since it doesn't blend in to the usual social media sharing environment like custom URLs. The upside is that single short URLs can be automatically shortened through a WordPress plugin or shared on your social media sites without going to their site first.

URL: ow.ly/YOUR_LINK_HERE

5. 2i.sndcdn.com:

Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and does not allow for branded short domains though they do offer two different subdomains with slightly different options including '2ecolo' which is the most popular option with 100 free redemptions per month (use them or lose them). You can use up to 4 subdomains at one time per account so you could send out 100 links using all four subdomains before you start hitting monthly limits if necessary but keep in mind that they are not 100% free after that point.

6. Snipurl:

Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and does not allow for branded short domains though you can create an RSS feed with shortened URLs for subscribers to use if desired (not practical in most cases). You can also track how many times each individual link has been clicked upon which is useful when trying to figure out which of your campaigns are more successful than others so you can promote them more often in the future! The downside is that single short URLs can only be automatically shortened through a WordPress plugin or shared on social media sites without going to their site first.

7. Shorl: Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and does not allow for branded short domains though this service is free (for now). You can create an RSS feed with shortened URLs for subscribers to use which isn't too practical in most cases but it's a nice option if that's your thing. The downside is that single short URLs cannot be automatically shortened unless you go to their site first so sharing them on social media sites will require you to copy the link and paste it into the status box manually before hitting 'Post'.

8. Linkshrink:

Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and the option to create a shortened URL with no link tracking to avoid click fraud though this feature can be somewhat complicated and requires additional knowledge of DoFollow and NoFollow links which we won't get into here (Google it! Wikipedia is your friend). They also offer an API for developers who want access to traffic stats from their apps or websites outside of social media sites. The downside is that they do not have a free branding option, only paid plans starting at $495 a month though the cost will vary depending on the plan and company size.

9. Rddme:

Features: No customizable appearance, traffic stats and does not allow for branded short domains though you can also create an RSS feed with shortened URLs for subscribers to use. You can track how many times each individual link has been clicked upon which is useful when trying to figure out which of your campaigns are more successful than others so you can promote them more often in the future! The downside is that single short URLs cannot be automatically shortened unless you go to their site first so sharing them on social media sites will require you to copy the link and paste it into the status box manually before hitting 'Post'.

bit.do  - One of the simplest links you'll find with an easy to use interface, stats displayed right on the page, multiple subdomains (with some needing email verification after 5 free ones are used), no branding option but it's still free (for now). 2i.sndcdn.com/YOUR_LINK_HERE

linkbun.ch - Another simple service with one neat feature that may come in handy depending on how you plan to use your short URLs: You can set them to NoFollow or DoFollow which can be useful if you want to avoid click fraud for one of your campaigns, don't need the link tracked, or plan to use an RSS feed with shortened URLs in the future. This service also allows you to create branded short domains starting at $69 a year though they do have some limitations based on the number of characters in your custom domain so keep that in mind when choosing yours. 3i.snipr.com/YOUR_LINK_HERE
