Reporting on Metrics that Include Tons of Bot Traffic

Did you share a post to your 500 Twitter followers and then, boom, get 45 website visitors off it? Even though you didn't get a single retweet...

Probably not! What you are looking at is mostly bot traffic. Bots are everywhere online and they crawl all your pages and click all your links, skewing your data. Some generic URL shortening services do not remove bot traffic from their reports, which is just ridiculously rude to marketers and gets their hopes up.

There are a few ways to double check the click report from a URL shortener with other data sources. First, start with Google Analytics - if you see tons of new sessions on the same day as the link drop without any organic sessions occurring before or after it, this is likely bot traffic.

You can also use your website analytics tool to look for pages that show a bounce rate of 100%, meaning the users are not staying, which means they are not human. Or you can see if you have people signing up for trial accounts in very large numbers over short periods of time, but no other actions - that's probably bots trying to create fake trial accounts faster than you can block them.

But there's good news! For all the likes and shares you do around here on social media, I will give you access to my exclusive list where I share with people exactly how much traffic they got from each social channel every day so they always know what is working what isn't... You can get that list by clicking this link here.

A lot of internet traffic is wasted because web visitors are not being guided to a website's best pages or posts. For example, a page that gets 50 visits per day could be getting as much as half or even more of those clicks to the wrong place... This happens for many reasons which we will discuss in another post but until then, here is a quick example of what you can do to improve conversions on your site. Free Edition Signup!
