All U-M units that want to use URL shorteners must be registered with [email protected] . Individuals may not register for their personal accounts; alas, they can only do so through their unit's registration process. The full list of active U-M unithoods is here , but look specifically under "Social Media & Digital Communications" and "Web Services." If a unit is not currently registered but wants to be, the request must come from an authorized representative of that unit. If you see something odd popping up on Twitter or Facebook claiming to be U-M, it's probably best not to click through because the person who set it up might have made their account private by now or decided to take down links entirely.

In addition to being safe, short URLs are also far easier for people to type correctly into their browsers than a link with 20-plus characters in it. Human brains simply process words better than numbers and letters if given only a few keystrokes. They're also faster at sending text messages digitally – one of the primary uses of U-M social media.

If you'd like to copy the shortened URLs one by one manually, just select a URL and press Ctrl + C (Command + C on Mac). Then paste it to your browser address bar by pressing Ctrl + V (Command + V on Mac). For example: myumi.ch/jW7o2+

On online website https://sho.rt, "myumi.ch/jW7o2+" is redirected into this URL: https://umich-socialmediaacademy-myumi-ch-courses-UMICH—Social—Media—Academy-.html.
